History of Nissan Performance

Nissan is an automotive brand that has been around for decades in Port Charlotte. The brand has seen much success over the years around Charlotte Harbor, especially when it comes to performance cars. Whether you are a new fan or an old one, the Nissan tradition of building innovative sports cars will surely intrigue you. Learn all about its history right here.

The Beginning of Nissan

To begin, let us look at the origins of Nissan as a whole. Nissan started as Nihon Sangyo in Japan, which originated from the founder, Yoshisuke Aikawa. Nihon Sangyo entered the Tokyo Stock Exchange by the ticker name NISSAN in 1933. However, the brand would not come to the U.S. until 1958, then known as Datsun.

Datsun vehicles were the first mass-produced Japanese vehicle, making a unique impact on the U.S. market. The first of which was the Datsun Type 15 in 1937. Twenty years later, in 1957, Nissan would introduce the Nissan Skyline, the predecessor to the revolutionary Nissan GT-R®.

Nissan Z Cars

Nissan would properly enter the world of performance and sports cars with the start of the Z series of vehicles. One of the first was the Fairlady Z, which launched in 1969. The Fairlady Z set a sports car record by selling more than 520,000 models over nine years. The 1970 Datsun 240Z was next up. It was similar to the Fairlady Z, as both vehicles were part of the first generation of Z cars. By the time the Datsun 240Z reached American soils, it was in high demand.

The second generation of Z cars brought the Datsun 280ZX, which launched in 1978 for the 1979 model year. With new styling on the exterior and interior, many drivers were attracted to the high level of luxury offered. The third generation added the Nissan 300ZX (Z31), the first Z car to use the Nissan moniker, and it was released in 1983. It brought standard air conditioning, leather upholstery, and much more. And it won the 1985 All Japan Rally Championships.

The fourth generation saw the Nissan 300ZX (Z32) come into play in 1989. It featured bold and beautiful craftsmanship and design. The fifth generation was the Nissan 350Z, which was released in 2002 and ended a 6-year production hiatus. For the sixth generation, from 2009 to the present, two vehicles were released. They are the Nissan 370Z and Nissan 370Z Roadster. Both feature exquisite performance and sleek, refined design.

Now, fans of Nissan sports cars should be looking forward to the all-new 2023 Nissan Z®.

The All-New 2023 Nissan Z®

The seventh generation of the Z series is the all-new 2023 Nissan Z. As the newest model, drivers can expect to find the latest features, technology, powertrain, and amenities in the 2023 Nissan Z®. Find a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine, ready to deliver 3.0 liters of pure exhilaration. The long hood and wide stance harkens back to the iconic design of previous generations. And overall, the 20223 Nissan Z® will take the road by storm when it is finally released.

The GT-R® NISMO

The Nissan GT-R NISMO® was inspired by the original Nissan Skyline and is another top performance model. It is track-born and road-ready. Built with an aerodynamic design, the GT-R NISMO® is tuned to bring out the very best a sports car has to offer.
